64 Bit Slackware?

I know almost nothing about Slackware specifically and am currently building a 64 bit machine. Is there a 64 bit version of Slackware or how would that work? I want to fully benefit from a 64 bit machine by having a 64 bit OS. I have always been interested in Slackware but this will be a deciding factor. Should I go with Gentoo or another Distribution. Any thoughts?

Thanks

AMD64 Running Slack-current

I have an AMD64 processor and I am running linux version 2.6.11. I know that I am not taking full advantage of my 64 bit processor, but it is still quicker than just about anything else. I first tried FC compiled for 86_64, but I had a lot of issues with it, and I really just didn't like FC. Try Slackware, and if you don't like it, then try gentoo.

I had a problem running Slack on a 64bit Athlon machine. Would randomly reboot and crash - other OSes ran fine on it (FreeBSD, NetBSD).

There's an unofficial port of slackware to 64bit, called slamd64. I don't know much about it so don't know if it's any good or not.

I take it you recompiled the kernel?

I will probably go with the Slackware install then.... because it's going to be quicker just running the 64 bit processor. And after all, I can just duel boot with another Distro to see what I like more. I've been a FC user almost my whole linux life but I want to explore, and I hear good things about Slack.

I wonder if you recompile to a 64 bit kernel you can still run
32 bit apps. Must be able to.
I suppose you'd recompile stuff like mod_utils and such.

Or would you need to recompile everything?

It's worth buying an AMD64 just to try it.

If the individual binaries arent compiled for 64bit then they aren't going to take advantage of your 64bit proc. You can still run 32bit binaries on a 64bit system, there just not going to be taking advantage of your 64bit system... That was a little repetitive...

So, you would have to compile everything from scratch if you wanted a full 64bit system. But now I think I'm just stating the obvious....
