4.4.14 suspend not work but 4.14.47 works

My laptop is ASUS FX53. In a fresh installed 14.2, the system cannot resume after suspending (pm-suspend), but after I upgrade the kernel to the slack-current version of 4.14.47, it works. I also found an interesting things: even for the 4.14.47, if I disabled the kernel KMS (nomodeset in kernel command line), the system again cannot resume from suspending.

Does anyone have some information on this function? Do you have a guess why this could happen?

There are two reasons that caused me to upgrade the kernel to 4.14.47:
1, resuming after suspending not work;
2, my WiFi chip not recognized by 4.4.14;

No idea, so my answer won't be very helpful to you. However, it is worth noting that I had a very similar problem as you on 4.4.14 and LXDE - by closing my netbook lid LXDE would resume but the screen would remain black, there was not way to remedy this other than rebooting the machine. However, I have just tested this with 4.4.132 and it doesn't appear to be a problem anymore.

"New" hardware requires newer kernels, it's not much to do about that.

The kernel evolves so much that you never know what works/break between versions.

I use old hardware and have the opposite problem, kernel 4.14 is broken on my laptop while 4.4 works flawless.

Find a kernel that works for you (LTS if you can), then use that.
