Unhappy 3G USB broadband modem not dialing out

I have one of the Huawei E220 USB modems used by many of the mobile carriers now. I've used it for a while now with Fedora 8 successfully using wvdial.

On Fedora when I plug in the E220 i get two devices, /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1.

I'm now trying to use "the same machine" that I used with Fedora with SLW 12.
When I plug in the modem I only get /dev/ttyUSB0 and I'm unable to dialout.

In kernels prior to 2.6.20 the E220 was picked up incorrectly as a CDROM drive. But Slackware 12's kernel is newer than that so I don't think this is the issue.

In /var/log/messages I do see

GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0

But i'm unable to use it.

So my question is, has anyone else seen this problem with a Huawei E220 modem and SLW 12, or does anyone know where I might be going wrong?

Thanks for the pointer, but everyone on that thread has gone through what I went through to get it working on Fedora. Slackware 12 seems different for some reason hence may question to the Slackware crowd, I'm hoping someone on this forum will shine some light on why SLW12 is showing different behavior to Fedora on the same hardware.
