I have a NVidia Vanta video adapter and a Compaq FS7550 Color Monitor and I want to know why I can't run X using 32 Bit. I can run Windows using 32 Bit and the pictures are way different but I am getting like 2D pictures when I am browsing the internet in Linux. Why? Does it have something to so with the Nvidia Driver or what? i would really like to improve my Linux experience
there is no such thing as "32 bit colour" - what windows calls 32 bits is 24 bit + 8 bits of alpha channel - X is more honest and just calls this 24 bit - so start it in 24 bit it is the same as windows in 32 bit.
you cant - set it to 24 and it is EXACTLY the same - X internally adds the 8 bits of alpha information, rather than pretending that theirs more bits of colour information.
as i said what windows calls "32 bit colour" is actually 24 bits + 8 bits of alpha channel, called 32 to make it sound better.
