2.6 kernel worth it?

Hi guys!

I haven't been in touch much with the linux community so am kinda in the dark now. I just re-installed slackware (Slackware-10 running the 2.4.26 kernel). I haven't really done all the driver installations and stuff. I just wanted to know if its worth it to upgrade to the 2.6 kernel?

If someone could tell or better yet, point me in the direction of a website with all the various upgrades/fixes I would be most grateful. Btw, I use my slackware mainly for programming and some 3D animations. So, your opinions on whether or not it's worth it to upgrade is most appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys!

or other mirror site u like
from slackware.com

for patch i have used
------------
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...ches/packages/

download the tgz files upgrade it by
"upgradepkg *.tgz" in the download folder
u can also give "upgradepkg --install-new *.tgz" it will install the pkg that havn't install

for kernel 2.6
use the slackware cd
testing folder (u will find the kernel 2.6 tgz file

install it installpkg *.tgz (with the alsa a driver)

read the "README.initrd" in the folder creafully

------------------------------------------------------
do not forget to give (all r in README.initrd)

mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.7 -m reiserfs (for reiserfs)

if ext3 then

mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.7 -m jbd:ext3 -f ext3 -r /dev/hdb3

edit the lilo
image = /boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.7
initrd = /boot/initrd.gz
root = /dev/hda6
label = Linux267
read-only

and at last run lilo as root

"lilo"

then reboot

install the gcc-3.4.0 from the testing folder
to compile mplayer after upgrade kernel i can't compile mplayer
then i upgrade the gcc from the testing foder all prob solved

Dev,

Im from the school of thought if you don't need it yet, don't upgrade yet
2.6 does have mahor improvements in 3d acceleration tho... Other than that,
I'd say stick with the tried-and-true, stable 2.4. Unless you like breaking stuff just so you can learn (nothing wrong with that
