2.6.8.1 -- kernel paging request?

I configured a new 2.6.8.1 kernel for my pc, however when it should have come up with the logon request it gave the warning that the kernel could not handle the paging request. I must have forgotten to include something in the kernel but I don't know what. Any ideas?

I added in some options, specifically BSD auditing support. The warning is now:

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual adress 00000068.

Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Did you have a working 2.6 config previously? If these two were your first attempts, your config probably is missing something. I've been running CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT=y with no problems (2.6.8.1 included), so I don't think that option is bad on that version.

What is your hardware, and please post the full oops. Does it still only occur at login time?

the error has something to do with ALSA-OSS compatibility modules. It started to give a list of alsa-oss modules When I left these modules out of the kernel the new kernel booted fine. However, once I tried to install ALSA (leaving out the ALSA-OSS modules) the kernel would not boot again. Any thoughts?

ok, it's working now so nevermind. I just got rid of the /usr/src/linux-2.6.8.1 folder and downloaded a new kernel source direct from kernel.org. The source I had must have been corrupt.
