2.6.16 questions
this is sort of based on the other 2.6 thread made today.
I followed the same instructions, and everything worked fine up until the reboot. It never loaded the kernel (after selecting linux from LILO), instead the screen went black, some hdd activity occured and then nothing.
Would this also be related to the oldconfig thingo? Im a bit scared to try it again until i know whats causing it (i've already nerfed my system 3 times (2x re-installs) and am currently running on Linux.old!!)

after all the disk action, are you able to login blindly ?
i mean: name, passwrd and "startx".
if X is coming up, you have misconfigured the console- or framebuffersupport
in the kernel config.
and did you make a second entry for your new kernel in the lilo.config file ?
if so, you should be able to choose your previous kernel from the lilo-menu.

Can you post your /etc/lilo.conf? I had a similar problem yesterday. The screen went blank and after about a minute or so I was presented with the gdm login screen.

I'll try that blind login thing on next reboot (downloading something atm).
Here's my lilo.conf, nothing very interesting in there though...
Code:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
prompt
timeout = 1200
# Override dangerous defaults that rewrite the partition table:
change-rules
reset
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
vga = 773
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
# vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256
# vga=771
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x64k
# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
# End LILO global section
# Windows bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
label = Windows
table = /dev/hda
# Windows bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hdb1
label = Linux
read-only
image = /boot/vmlinuz.old
root = /dev/hdb1
label = Linux.old
read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends

True. My problem was I had given wrong initrd entry in the lilo.conf.
Your lilo seems to be ok.
