2.6.12 out, comments in :)

Sweeeeeeeeeet!

Its finally out, /me is compiling already, lol

so far so good, but comments, anyone? :D

EDIT:
For anyone who wants help in installing, here's my guide. I'll update the kernel versions, but the installation is still the same
http://xushi.co.uk/guides/kernel.php

EDIT 2:

I like how export INSTALL_PATH ?= /boot is uncommented by default now.

failure_man 06-18-2005 03:49 PM

Quite probably a bug.

Hmm, works fine here.

Anybody upgrading to 2.6.12 should also update udev to v0.58 otherwise
reboot will be somewhat mystifying...

My copy of slack-current has udev at 0.54, find 0.58 at:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/util...ev-058.tar.bz2
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/util...8.tar.bz2.sign

I don't use udev, just passing on the first 'gotcha' from LKML.

netcrawl 06-18-2005 08:09 PM

I've had 2.6.12 running on 2 slack-current boxes, a server and my desktop, with udev-054-i486-3 in use, for about 7 hours now, and have no problems at boot or otherwise. Same as it ever was.

Bruce Hill 06-18-2005 08:36 PM

Did you write any udev rules?

2.6.12 rocks I love the Conservative governor (not Arnold) it boosts my battery life to 9hrs from 7 1/2 hrs. Ill get back to you guys after i remove 2.4.30 in a few days.

netcrawl 06-18-2005 09:06 PM

No, I have no need for custom udev rules... fortunately, as it turns out.:)

That's why you didn't have the problem. I don't use udev, either,
but many of our fellow Linuxers do.

I still prefer the 2.4 series, but just today I downloaded the 2.6.11.11 from a slackware mirror:mad:
It took me 2hrs with my ISDN connection.

You may laugh at me freely. I probably deserve it.

bird603568 06-18-2005 09:24 PM

this is what I would do ;) ;) Get aSteal your neighbors wifi, go wardriving to download it or download it at work/school and put it on a cd. not that I have done any but they work.

keefaz 06-19-2005 02:11 AM

Chinaman, I have custom udev rules and the rules are applied
at boot without any problem, these rules just set symlinks though

/etc/udev/rules.d/10_keefaz.rules :
Code:

KERNEL="hdc", SYMLINK="dvd dvdrecorder cdrom1"
KERNEL="hdd", SYMLINK="cdrom cdrecorder cdrom2"

udev package : udev-054-i486-3

Are you running 2.6.12? If so, you should write the kernel devls at
LKML and let them know that's not the problem, and help them find
out the real source.

keefaz 06-19-2005 06:14 AM

I use 2.6.12 but as I said, my rules just set symlinks
I have not devices that require rules queries to
/sys dir, so I can't test deeper

uselpa 06-19-2005 08:35 AM

I tried 2.6.12 just for fun, and it works fine for me. Except for VMWare5, which works well with the 2.6.10 kernel from Slack10.1.
Anybody else using VMWare5 with that kernel?
