2.6.10 boot stopping at udev....
 

hi,

I built the 2.6.10 kernal yestarday. On the bootup it stops at this line:

'Initializing udev dynamic device'

it then hangs for about 5-7 minutes, then,

'Failed to open hda2......reiserfs exited 6' and some other text, then you either put the root password in and it boots on single user mode, or it just restarts.


Never had a problem with reiser in the past, i must be building something which conflicts or missing something. I have been looking through the kernel menu and am none the wisers.

any suggestions?

EDIT: i have the reiserfs as built in, 2fs and 3fs are also built in.

Your hda is ide ? Did you check if you have enabled your motherboard IDE controler in config ?

Just realized that you must have the IDE controler enabled to see this output

Maybe time to go to single mode and learn about reiserfsck tool

the thing is on the base kernel 2.4.x you get with 10.1, it boots it, and i have used the rieser fs for the last year on that PC on the 2.6.7 kernel.

so i dont think reiserfsck will help much, but i will give it a go.

If no success, try to post your complete error boot message

#reiserfsck --check /dev/hda

Failed to open the device /devhda : No Such File or Directory


(tried with hda1 / hda2)

the problem is the boot message flashes up only for a few seconds then it restarts, you have of typed your root password before the error message to get it boot on single user mode.

Is your lilo config ok, I mean there is no initrd here, right ?
If you boot successfully with 2.4 kernel, I think too there is a udev problem or something
Have you hotplug enabled (/etc/rc.d/rc.hotplug set as executable) ?

lilo is ok. no initrd file only a sym link to the initrd.README file,

hot plug is enabled.


i was thinking maybe i didnt install something which was needed, but then how would the 2.4.x kernel work.

Check in /var/log/packages if you have udev installed in case
and if /etc/rc.d/rc.udev is executable, have you a /sys directory ?

You could try make menuconfig, load the config from the slackware default 2.6.10 kernel and just
enable reiserFS as built-in, if that works, backup the new config and feel free to redo a kernel
compile, enable or disable features as you wish
