2.6.0 - CPU Fan does not operate

My laptop cpu fan spins during the bios, but then doesn't operate after that. I have included all of the acpi features (and disabled apm) during menuconfig, and have installed acpid. When I run acpid, it reponds that it is busy.

I have determined why apcid does not work- it cannot post info to /proc/acpi/event (the file doesn't give me read/write permission even though I am root) Do you have read/write persmission for your /proc/acpi/ dir?

In addition, the /proc/acpi/fan etc. directories are empty (although I compiled apci support into the kernel) Why!?!?

Although I really like slackware, an operating fan is fairly important, do you have any advice? Would the bios be responsible? (Its A03 which was written in 2002 I believe - there are more recent versions (A09), but they break xfree86)

Slackware 9.1
kernel 2.6.0

Try downloading and installing a newer version of acpi-daemon (if it exists), otherwise just reinstall the one you're using now.
After the install, change permission of the /proc/acpi/ directory with chmod
