10.2 not detecting network card
 
Hi, I've just installed 10.2 after having messed (a little bit) with 10.1 until now. When I installed 10.1, it let me set up my network fine and I was able to get online. However, after installing 10.2 this wasn't the case. The installation including the network setup went exactly the same, but I couldn't get online with a browser. I ran netconfig and this time it asked if I wanted it to probe for my network card. It had never done this before in 10.1 or 10.2 install but I said yes. Then it told me it couldn't detect anything. So now I'm without a network connection, what changed?

What type of network card do you have? Have you recompiled the kernel since or before your upgrade?

Look at /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent and see if it is executable. If it is, try this:

chmod -x /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent

Reboot and see what happens.

-My network card is integrated, I have an Intel 855GME chipset, so it's whatever came with that.
-I have never compiled a kernel in my life. The 10.2 install was completely from scratch, I selected the default kernel just like when I installed 10.1.
-/etc/hotplug/firmware.agent was indeed executable, and I un-executabled it. Then I rebooted. Nothing. So I ran netconfig again. Still nothing.

post up your dmesg, lspci, lsmod, and i suppose ifconfig and the contents of /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf. that will give us a place to start. =)

are you sure it's not there? what do you have in /etc/rc.d? if it's really not there, then i suppose you need to reinstall...hmm. www.slackware.com lists tcpip-0.17-i486-35 (i think). do you have slackpkg installed? if you do just type

su -
(password)
slackpkg remove tcpip
slackpkg install tcpip

it'll prompt you in both cases, just say yes. otherwise, you can do this with pkgtool. enter pkgtool, choose to "remove", find tcpip, select it with spacebar, and then hit enter. then put in your slackware install disc (i'm guessing disc 1, but it may be disc 2) and look in the packages directory. change into the directory containing the tcpip-blah.tgz file, and type

installpkg tcpip

let us know how it goes!

The problem is very simply that your system is not loading the module for your Ethernet card, and as such, the kernel doesn't detect it.

You need to load the module "b44". So doing:

modprobe b44

Would load the driver for your card, and then you could run through the netconfig and have a working setup.

You would probably want to not have to do that each time, so you could add that modprobe command to rc.modules, or even rc.local.

i got the same problem.

I tried modprobe b44 and it says:

init_module: nosuch device.

I don't have slackpkg installed but i'l try that later.

Any ideia?

The b44 module only works with that specific NIC, if you have a different NIC, it isn't going to work.

slack 10.2 installed everything.

with ifconfig only apears lo. (refering to wireless i guess)

I want to install ethe0, i do netconfig and do those steps and nothing.

I got rc.inet1 all ok,with all data in the place and nothing too.

ok, well lo is your loopback interface. don't worry about that, it's always there. can you please post the output of these two commands:

lspci
lsmod

and if you know what brand/model your ethernet card is, that would help.
