[Slackware64-current] newest kernel with better amdgpu support.

Hi,
Everyone heard about kernel 4.15 and how AMD improved the support of amdgpu cards.
There is any chance to have it on slackware 15?
Even as testing packages?

Possibly not relevant for amd users, but when I tried 4.15.4 here mplayer started to consistently crash my entire system when exiting (Couldn't even ssh in). Dmesg reports this, but I understand I should rebuild the kernel with KASN and retry.

I've not had any problems with MPlayer, either directly or using the SMPlayer front end, with any of the 4.15.x kernels download from DUSK (aka, Board Member 55020).

https://dusk.idlemoor.tk/

At the moment the 4.15.5 kernel is installed

I suspect nouveau, but that is not currently clear yet. I just thought it was worth mentioning as its possible other people could be affected.

Slackware releases usually follow longterm status kernels. Kernel 4.14 is longterm, 4.15 is not longterm. Not sure the core team would gain much benefit with kernel 4.15 in testing. That doesn't stop Slackware users from compiling their own kernels.

IMHO the gentleman with the hyphenated surname should make the 4.15.x series a long term service kernel and drop 4.14.
The 4.15.x series provides better support for AMD Ryzen CPUs, released a year ago, and some of the newer Intel CPUs.
Again, just my two cents worth.

I agree, 4.15 seems to be a better longterm candidate than 4.14. The longterm kernel designation is critical to longterm support for Slackware or any other distribution.

In my travels around the 'Net earlier this morning I came across a news story about Ubuntu switching to the 4.15 kernel for their 18.04 LTS release.....
Here is the story, https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...s-Ubuntu-18.04

I'm not a Ubuntu fan, but it seems like a wise decision.

OTOH, if the next release of Slackware is still many months away, it doesn't really matter as the 4.16 or 4.17 or whatever LTS will be out by then.

I'm hoping that if Pat does stick with the 4.14 kernel (which I would totally understand since it is an LTS kernel) that he'll put out a config for the latest stable kernel in testing/. But, as Chuck56 mentioned, you're free to run your own kernel, which I have done on my main desktop for years.

I never know how to build kernel as Pat does, with all the packages, headers, source and so on...

As mentioned in post #3, above, I've had great success using the "Dave's Unofficial Slackware Kernels," aka, "DUSK," provided by Board Member 55020.

Its really easy. You can skip the headers and just use Pat's as well.
