[Slackware 13.0] Xorg autodetection works but makes X freeze when quitting WM/DE

The title says it all, all my hardware was recognized perfectly without writing any xorg.conf but when I quit the window manager/Desktop Environment in runlevel 4 X just freezes on a black screen without returning to the manager(KDM i think). I can still login on tty6.
I tried renaming xorg.conf-vesa to xorg.conf and it works, but now my graphics card is not configured, among other things.

Sending SIGHUP to kdm also solves the problem(kdm login screen reappears).

Does someone know what might be causing the problem?
I would like to fix it without having to write a xorg.conf, if that's possible.

It might help to give your video card details, and a portion of /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Some video cards can use multiple drivers, and/or might actually need a configuration file. Not sure why you would not want to use an Xorg.conf. Having a configure-less Xorg is nice and all, but as you've witnessed first hand - opens up too many chances for a problem to occur.

If you have intel graphics, it's a known problem with intel drivers 2.8.0 and 2.8.1 (but 2.7.1 is ok). You can "fix" it by removing the comment character "#" from the beginning of line "TerminateServer=true" in file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc. Then kdm starts a new X server process instead of trying to reinitialize the driver for the next session.
