Hi Kikinovak,
I have found another issue with MATE. I packaged Networkmanager-OpenVPN from Sbopkg (Slackbuilds.org) and installed it, but either as root or as normal user I can not save the VPN configuration. The "Save" button is gray.
Maybe you can solve my problem.
Thanks in advance.

Hi aszabo,
First, read this thread please: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ed-4175488836/
At first glance, I don't know what's wrong with NetworkManager-OpenVPN, since I never use it.
Cheers,
Niki

I use the Networkmanager-OpenVPN gui from SBo on my regular Slackware64-14.1 with MATE from the MSB project and it works fine. The Save button also works ok. I have to use it all the time to connect to my work computer.

Erm... just a silly question, but did you activate the NetworkManager?

Hi Chess,
I also use the the Networkmanager-OpenVPN on my Slackware14.1 with MATE exactly like you and it works fine there, only in MLED not.

Now I'm genuinely puzzled. I'm only using plain NetworkManager on MLED, but so far, I must have installed it on a good dozen laptops, and so far, I got no complaints. I doubt this is something MLED- or MATE-specific.

My NetworkManager works too, I have problem with NetworkManager-openVPN, not with NetworkManager self.

I have forgotten to mention that this problem occurs under VirtualBox, since I always try a new distro with VirtualBox, but I don't think that this would be the reason.

Hi
I installed MLED on my mum's laptop for this very reason:
Quote:
After much experimenting, I admit I have a strong bias for Xfce. It's by far the most robust, stable and "industrial grade" desktop. By this, I mean I can install it on client's desktop PCs and pretty much forget about it. And it's also quite friendly for computer-illiterate users.
|
my mum being the epitome of a computer illiterate user. Network manager works fine. For my mum, it's just the perfect; one word processor, one internet browser; no choices and everything works. I changed some of the apps at the bottom of the screen - for example, she never uses chat - I don't think she even knows what it is.
I have it set up with xfce because the laptop is relatively old and sluggish, but in comparison with what it was running before, it is now positively racy. Thankyou very much for providing something easy to maintain from a distance, easy to use for the computer illiterate and something that just works.

I bet NetworkManager-OpenVPN is struggling with VirtualBox' Network Address Translation (default configuration).

This must be a problem with your VirtualBox configuration.

You're welcome. Years of testing with less computer literate users went into this.
