'X -config' not working

Well title says it all - issuing 'X -config xxxx' used to work, but now gets stuck. I have a black screen with a X for a mouse cursor (which moves with mouse) but thats as far as it loads.

Xorg log doesn't show anything relevant but I notice it always ends with a line mouse0:close (or similar)

My xorg.norm (I have 2 - one for normal and one with twinview on):
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "X.org Configured"

well, what are you trying to do?

it sounds like you want KDE.

"init 4" should do the trick.

try using something else like xorgcfg, xorgsetup, or xorgconfig. X-config is kind of unreliable.

The thing is I have 2 working xorg.conf files - one with twinview and one off - that way I can switch from having the TV on or not.
So I don't need to setup my xorg.confs as they both work fine. At the moment I'm doing a 'mv xorg.twinview xorg.conf' followed by 'startx' in a script, but it would be nicer just to use the -config switch to use one or the other confs.

You should make two different layouts in the same xorg.conf file, and you'll be fine: man startx && man xorg.conf
That way you could run: startx -- -layout Singlemonitor or startx -- -layout Dualmonitors

If you want to stay with your solution, I think you need to run: startx -- -config xorg.conf
