Many to SuSE, graphical framerate problems

I have just switched from Mandrake 8.2 to SuSE 8.2 (I wanted a distro that I could pick up in a retail store).

I have a P4 2.4 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Intel MoBo, nVidia GeForce4 MX440 AGP, Soundblaster Live 5.1, 80 GB WestDig HD, 7.9 GB Maxtor HD,...

I installed the latest nVidia Drivers using the script. Sometimes I get decent framerates, other times the framerates crawl... Obviously, some process is hogging that bandwidth on the machine. WineX is also stunted, as are Loki installers (no graphical windoze screens, only text). Does anyone know about problems associated with SuSE 8.2 and either nVidia drivers or conflicting packages with WineX??? I thought I heard about such a thing.

Other than that, my install seems good. The sound works, as does OpenGL (although slowly). WineX (2.2 and 3.1) does launch the games, just sometimes with crappy framerates. I had some problem installing some packages off of CD #2...

Although you installed the nvidia drivers, are you certain that they are in use?

Do you get the nvidia splash screen as X loads?

Did you specify "Load GLX" in your /etc/XF86Config?

If you go to /usr/lib and do an ls -al *GL* Does libGL.so.1 link to the nvidia driver and not a mesasoft driver?

I've been running SuSE Pro since release and get teriffic performance and have none of the issues you have described, I also use WineX 3, Loki installers, etc.

I also installed 8.2 on a friend's laptop last week via FTP and it works fine with 3D, although his GF2Go video card isn't the greatest, it runs Enemy Teritorry well at 800x600.

Thanks for responding Mono, I fixed the problem. All it required was an edit of my XFConfig to reflect no DRI (probably the problem) and to reflect NvAgp being utilized...

My framerates are now back up to par.
