Audio CD problem

Hi!

I'm facing a problem while playing audio CDs in RHL9.
I have 2 operating systems on my machine and audio CDs can be played without a problem in Windows ME. But when I attempt to play a CD using RHL gnome-cd player starts playing the cd but I'm unable to hear anything(despite making adjustments to the volume). The same thing happens when I use cdp. I don't have any problem in playing music files on my hard disk.

Can someone please help me out?

In Linux it is required that you have an audio cable running from the back of your cdrom device to the sound card. You can pick one up at just about any computer shop for less than 5 US dollars (only know US prices, sorry).

That is likely the problem you are experiencing.

Actually, Im not sure that that is his problem. If he can play audio cd's in win me then the audio cable from his cdrom to the sound card is there. Do you have any sound at all in linux? When you say that you have no problems playing music from your harddrive is that under windoze or RHL? Is it the same file format as the cd?

You are right. It plays everything well under Windows. The problems arise only while playing CDs in RHL. In RHL, I'm able to play WAV, RealAudio and stuff like that without any problem. I'm able to rip CDs and play them too. The only problem is that I can't play CDs directly using cdp or gnome-cd.

windows can use digital audio extraction to play cd audio via IDE, so you don't need an audio cable. you do waste CPU time on this though, so i know which one i would rather use...

Have you tried using another program? something from KDE maybe. Also, go into your settings and look there. I seem to recall something about that but its to fuzzy to be of use.
Yeah, I liked the name. I could tell you the story, but its highly classified and I dont care much for the FBI waking me at 3 in the morning.

I'm really grateful that you folks took the time and the effort to respond. Let me try having a hardware guy come home and have the connection wire from the CD player checked( hardware scares the hell out of me!).

And 10ded, I have tried a whole range of apps...didn't help to much.

I have the exact same problem. I have the cable thought, and I have tried every Audio Program I have from GUI to Text Base. Very
covfused here. I can play all other forms of music but .cda . I too can ripp the CD and then hear it in WAV, OGG, MP3, ETC.... Help Me Please.

Well, .cda files do not actually exist. You can play audio CDs from XMMS using digital audio extraction with their plugin...
