finaly got my PcTel hsp56 mr modem to work

I am a so this is a great experiance for me it took me a while but i got it done even the web site that is for pctel linux modems says that there is no support for the MR - pctel modem but i thought i could do it so i did

if there is any other that needs alittle help feel free to ask

ok here is a step by step of how I got the modem to work


1. download source for driver at

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pctel-linux/
get the latest version should be PcTel - 0.9.6

2.Change your /usr/src/linux-x.x directory to /usr/src/linux

3.Unzip and run ./configure --with-hal=?
use /.configure -with-hal-list to view a list.

4. run make

5. run make install

6. Change your kernel settings to enable kernel module loading, ppp, PC style hardware, and EISA suport and also you may need to add ppp suport for async serial ports and disable symmetric multi-processing suport ( i have symmetric multi-processing suport and it works both ways for me)

7. run insmod -f pctel

8. run insmod -f ptserial

( BOth insmod comands may show errors but everything should be ok)

9.setup kppp, The modem port should be /dev/mode which points
to /dev/ttys15 , use software flow control, cr line termination
( LF and LF/CR line termination makes kppp jam up when i use it)

10. setup the rest on your own ( phone number, isp name, etc. etc.

Hi, i have a problem. I go from one end of CS to other but didn't found some driver able to made my modem(HSP56 MR) happy. Do you know some site in CS where is good drivers for him?

matt...your second step on changing directory..what exactly do you mean by that?

well the driver is setup to use /usr/src/linux insted of the /usr/src/linux-2.4.20 or what ever version of kernel you have
so i just renamed the directory

I feel so lost in Linux...I'm from the windows generation. So can you explain in detail how to unzip a file. I've opened the ziped driver file, but when I double click on any of the files in your steps all they do is open in text form. How do I get them to run like a program?

I think that i will happy small pengiun, if i was found pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz, but i was feel like Alice in rabbit's "pipe" , when i try to connect.

Compile pctel-0.9.6.......................ok
Load modules...............................ok
Calling my ISP...............................ok
Authorize to "open gates of CS".......failed(PPD die:,(( )

I try 3 of ISPs, but with match results. Pleas, help me, where i do mistake?
mmmmm And one more problem. My sound card work on IRQ 10(like as my modem). How i can set IRQ of them.(Because i cannot play music and surfing in one time).

I've searched all over tryin' to sort out my same modem prob, this looks like the answer. I'm nearly 50 and just starting to use Linux after years of windows - I'm really pissed about Bill's attempt at world domination - and I ain't got a clue but I'll pick it up as I go along. The forum is a Godsend. Hopefully Ill get this bloody modem workin' then I can ditch MS. Thanks for the answer (I hope)

now, all this would probably work if i could get the damn tarball onto my linux machine...i've tried both floppy and CD-R, but the old man just won't read the disks. you see, i'd download it str8 to the linux machine, but you see, i can't seem to get my modem to work...

Instead of jumping through the hoops you went through, I just gave in and bought a US Robotics Sportster ext modem and connected it to ttyS0. Detected the modem on OS install perfectly and works flawlessly.

Now, if only I could get faster modem connections than 21.6k. Living in the sticks sometimes sucks.
