Mandriva 2006 tooo slow

I am new at linux, i installed mandriva 2006 powerpack in a pentium III 500mhz 256 ram 20gb. The thing works too slowly it takes about 15 minutes to start and starting applications takes for ever. Is this suposed to hapen?, is my system too old. Im not sure if i set up the video card correctly but i dont think that should make the system so slow. Any help would be apreciated, thanks a lot.

you do have a low end machine, but with some careful work it could be quite usable.

First of all, you need to figure out what services you are running, and get rid of the ones you dont need. By default, your probally running a web server, a print server, a ftp server, ssh, just to name a few. I dont use your distro, but poke around and find out how to disable all the crap you dont need.

Secondly.... if you really want it to respond well, your going to want a "lightweight window manager" Unlike windows, in linux you can choose what "version of windows" shows your desktop. KDE and GNOME are very nice desktops, but they are too full featured for a low end mahine. Youll have a bit more learning curve with a simpiler WM, but the performance increase may be well worth it. experiment with a few until you find one you like. I like Fluxbox, but that might be a little too minimalistic for most people.

Finally, if you can afford one cheap upgrade, get more ram. Linux, windows, any os you run will be happier with 512 than 256, and pc100/133 is getting dirt cheap if you buy on ebay/newegg/friends with extra ram from upgrades :P

thanks for the help, im going to search for the services, however when i installed it i didnt choose the web and ftp server options.Im also going to try the fluxbox, about upgrading i wanted this computer to work well withouth any upgrades thats why i got mandriva, on the minimun requirements for the program they said that it could be instaled since pentium 1, 128 mg ram and 1 gb hard drive. I also choosed the powerpack version because in mandarivas page it said "innovations specific to PowerPack: Low resources setup: this means that Mandriva automatically assesses available hardware resources and will install software that meets your hardware configuration" But this didnt happened and the thing just wont work, maeby is not such a good distro, i will trie your recommendations, thanks for the help

You should also try the XFCE desktop, it might help. It's in the middle from more simple window managers like Fluxbox and the like but still has some good looking appeal á la KDE/Gnome.
Also, don't give up on Mandriva or any linux for that matter! It'll take some time but your computer will be happier than running windows 98

I've read a good number of times that either kat or kded can make a 2006 system crawl. Maybe this is the case for you...

Hi servent_17,

The symptoms you describe sound like an APIC problem.

What you need to do is open the mandrake control centre and in the "Boot" section click on the Bootloader icon. Underneath where it says "Delay before booting default image" you should see three checkboxes. Check the two that have APIC in the description. NOT the one that says ACPI.

Once you've checked those two boxes click on the next button on the bottom right corner and it will update your bootloader. This should fix your problems, but you will have to reboot before it takes effect.

What's going on w/ Mandriva 2006. Apparently its just been released and isn't available to use. Only specific club members can use it. My club membership is the Aluminum Club Membership. The only reason I have that membership is because Mandriva is always coming out with a version of M. Linux. The members w/ Silver Membership and up has access to download the ISO for 2006. That isn't fair/. In other words, I paid the memebership to gain access to the ISOs, RPM, mirrors, and even bit torrents. Because my membership of a lower rank they want release to the Aluminum members. There terms, conditions, disclosures, and agreement doesn't mention that they would be doing such a thing. Well if anyone else encounter the same situation, please reply back what you did. Or better yet, is there a site or FTP site that I go to, to install Mandriva 2006. I appreciate any information I can get. How did anyone get Mandriva 2006. I am going everywhere to find 2006. And because my club memebership is Aluminum, I do not have the ability to download the ISOs. Please help me out. Thank you.
