Good VPN solution

Just to note I did look around the forums first. My questions what is the best and easieest way to make a secure/encrypted connection from a remote host to my LAN. I'm not talking about a normal SSH connection, I'm talking about one where I can reference a port (say 4000) on an external machine and have the traffic ported over the secure link to my Linux gateway. I heard about two solutions, SSH forwarding and FreeVPN? I already have SSH server on the local Linux box. The remote host will most likely be a Winbox with PuTTY. I've tried to get a SSH port forwarding to work, but I could never get the commands straight. Maye someone can just help me with those commands. Basically I want to connect to my LAN at external port 5000 and have it connect to a machine inside the private LAN. Does this make sense? Just ask me questions if this was confusing.

Here's a diagram:

ExternalHost
Connect 127.0.0.1:4000
|| Have a port forward here to my gateway:5000
MY Gateway:5000
Private Network Machine :110

When the traffic comes back out how it interact with my IPTABLES/MASQing firewall?

I don't know if this helps, but you might look into CIPE and CIPE-win32. They are utilities for connecting subnet via an encrypted UDP tunnel. You might also check into something like PoPToP to create a PPTP tunnel.
