problems with nvidia installer on Mandrake 10.1

I am a Linux NEWBIE (5 hours old), I decided for my first feat to install Nvidia's driver for GForce2 video card. I have chosen Mandrake 10.1 official for my linux enviroment. I have managed to edit inittab file and xorg.conf file as according to the tutorial and Nvidia's webpage. I tried installing the Nividia driver from their website and installation failed, here is my log file.

There was a ftp mirror but it says I can't post urls, also the same about driver download page.

Use the Mandrake Control Center Install Software section to install the Development packages, or use it to search for the gcc packages. You need to be able to compile the nVidia module against your kernel's source files (check they're installed too).

Ok, I reinstalled Mandrake with the development package but now it's saying it can't find the source code path.

It's a problem with the new nvidia drivers, try using older drivers or search on google for patched drivers.

as far as I was aware, you didn't need development packages to install the nvidia driver.

you just had to have the matching kernel and sources.

then kill the xserver (crtl+alt+delete or was it ctrl+alt+backspace? untill you have an init 3 login - you may beable to just do init 3 in a root prompt)

then run the downloaded file with
Code:
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run
when it asks you select yes to accept the licence, and keep accepting for the rest i.e. no precompiled kernel interface do you want....... etc etc

then you should just have to modify the xorg.conf file so that under the graphics device section you are using "nvidia" for the driver and not the generic "nv".

regards

John

If you are not using kernel 2.6.10 and the latest nvidia driver, you will keep getting the "source not found error" no mtter what you try, unless you get a patched nvidia driver.

Erm, Mandrake 10.1's 2.6.8.1-something kernel, standard nvidia driver, worked fine for me (just need to add a line to /etc/modprobe.preload).
You need the development tools if it doesnt find a precompiled interface for your kernel, and I never let it look online.

You need the kernel source as well as the gcc suite. `urpmi kernel-source` should do it.

Well, probably Mandrakes kernel is patched or something for this problem, go on the web and you'll find that most distros suffered from this "kernel source not found problem" after recent kernel upgrades.

Hello,

With MDK10.1, I had the best result from using the (older) 6111 NVIDIA Driver.
You have to make a tiny chance to the NVIDIA source code, but it is very easy, and well explained in this thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=248615

... See the posting from linux24.

You'll be up & running in 5 mins.

Where can you get those patched drivers. I've been trying to install the drivers on 2.6.10 for some time now but the newest driver doesn't work properly for me so I need an older one.

Ok, I installed the source code, put the nvidia line in modprobe.preload, now I see the Nvidia logo when I type startx but then I get a blank blue screen with a bar 3/4 of the way down and after that NOTHING. I can still move the mouse but nothing happens. What happend, what do I do now?

Try moving off the bottom right edges and see if the screen moves over (might be mismatch resolution/virtual screen size, kinda like a zoomed in view effect.) Failing that try Ctrl+Alt+F1, log in as root and try service dm status.
