Thank you very much everyone - a summary


Thank you to everyone who has posted to this thread, it enabled me to install my sound system nicely. Below is a brief summary for what I did for future users!

1: Install debian, kernel 2.6 (using "linux26") when booting setup
2: Install X Window system, 'mc' and KDE
3:

apt-get install discover
4:
Code:
apt-get install alsa
5: modify '/etc/hotplug/blacklist', and add

sound
via82cxxx_audio
6: reboot
7: run 'alsaconf'
8: Turn the volume up (it seems to zero it, I was puzzled for a while, because I thought alsaconf had said it was going to set them to maximum)
9: Test a sound, or try

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
