Can't Sleep

I have a single user, member of the Power group, desktop with Slackware 15.00

On the KDE Application Launcher (bottom left corner) I can see options to
  • Sleep
  • Hibernate
  • Restart
  • Shutdown

Sleep - goes to sleep and wakes up almost immediately.
Hibernate - hibernates and wakes up when told.
Restart - restarts the machine
Shutdown - shutdowns the machine

On the logon screen. I see the options
  • Sleep
  • Restart
  • Shutdown

Sleep - goes to sleep and wakes up almost immediately.
Restart - restarts the machine
Shutdown - shutdowns the machine

Two questions -
  1. why does Sleep go to sleep and wakes up almost immediately?
  2. why no Hibernate option on the KDE logon screen, but there is a sleep option?

And here I was wondering "What can insomnia have to do with linux?

The usual names for power states are
  • Standby - a windows thing which only blanks the screen
  • Suspend - A powerdows state with everything held in ram
  • hibernate you have correct, it writes to swap and powers off. On Power on, it loads the kernel, then restores the system.
  • Shut down I think we all get.

Do you have anything attached by USB? Also it could be very well Wakeonlan as well.
Also, are you able to change state to hibernate or it fails?

Just a "stupid" case: after clicking on sleep don't move your mouse any more, because that will force the system to wake up.

I says Sleep.

On my PC once put to Sleep, it takes a tap of the Power Button to Wake it up again. Mouse, key board has no effect.

Thanks. That must have been it. On my machine it's so quick entering sleep that I could still have been holding/moving the mouse. Hibernate takes a lot longer so is not so sensitive to mouse movements at the start of the process.
