[SOLVED] NetworkManager applet (nm-applet) long hangs in -current

I've just upgrade to -current (64bits) on a laptop. I've been using wicd on Fluxbox for many, many years - but seeing as there is no sign of it being ported to Python 3, I thought I should give NetworkManager a go, to be prepared for the eventuality of having to switch over. I've stopped the wicd server, killed wicd-client, started the NetworkManager service, and then started nm-applet. It all kind of works - I can connect to wifi networks and open up settings. But the applet hangs badly - somewhere between 2-4 minutes. Then it unfreezes, I can use the interface for 1-2 minutes, then it hangs again. Starting nm-applet from the command line, I can see the following warning message - but I can't be certain if they are causing the hangs or not.

(nm-applet:31660): nm-applet-WARNING **: 15:20:38.948: Failed to show notification: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Notifications: Timeout was reached

Is there anything else that I've missed? My user is in the 'netdev' group - anything else that the NetworkManager service or applet needs? I can't seem to find any suggestions on Google or in the docs.

I do not use Fluxbox, but I have found that starting the xfce-notifyd daemon stops the hanging of nm-applet

I've also stumbled on this issue, nm-applet wants to send you notifications and if there's no daemon to use it times out the request blocking.

If you don't like or don't want to use the xfce daemon, there's a lightweight alternative called dunst (and probably many more that I don't know about)

Hi, I found your post and I found a solution to a similar problem I was having. When I tried to use nm-applet to connect via a wifi link, I was getting errors and lockups about nm-applet permission denied: can't open freedesktop.org.secrets. I found the solution on the Gentoo site. For normal users to access the freedesktop.org secrets the user must be a member of the plugdev group. Command to use: usermod -aG plugdev username

Also remember to have the /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon installed and executable.

Fixed the problem. I hope someone finds this useful.
