TERM=linux is set by getty and in /etc/profile so it's set to linux by default only when logging into the system, not when starting a terminal emulator which picks whatever TERM it wants instead of inheriting it from their parent.

Oh, so the terminal used is decided by the program, in this case sbopkg? But it can be overridden by doing $TERM=<terminal emulator> ?
