I'll try to remember to test 68.x in some distros.
I tested Ubuntu MATE 19.10 and CentOS 7.7, both with Thunderbird 68.x. I could not replicate the segfault.

CentOS still uses a very old gcc, but Ubuntu MATE 19.10 has moved on to gcc9, so if you're not seeing the segfault there then it should rule out a gcc9 issue. Now I'm wondering if perhaps the segfault occurs in a font-related library, and if so, if they've configured to use a system version where we use a bundled one, or vise versa.

Thanks for checking in.

I'm poking around with some different mozconfig options and trying gcc rather than clang.

I'm testing on 14.2 rather than Current.

Based on your post the gcc9 observation won't help me but at least provides a note of encouragement with compiling in Current.

Looks like CentOS 7.7 is using gcc 4.8.5, while 14.2 is using 5.5. I'm not a compiling expert and don't play one on TV so I don't know what differences that might mean. I found the CentOS source package and will try to wade through the build script and patches.

If you want to provide me some direction I'll try to poke around.

Another note: On 14.2 compiling TB with gcc fails with an error that gcc 6.1+ is required.
