Thankfully the mods are mature and cosmopolitan enough to care little about what's commonly called "expletives". I've never understood the rationale why some people think "shit" is offensive but "poop", "caca" and "maird" as examples are not. How can a word be inherently offensive (it's only a symbol!) while the actual thing it describes is not??? As for "fuck" (is it really an acronym for "Forbidden Use Carnal Knowledge"?) I have often wondered why the curse "Get fucked!" isn't instead the equivalent of "Have a REALLY nice day"

That the mods are so adult, I think engenders adult discretion in all it's members. It's one reason LQN is in many ways in the Top 3 Forums I've had the pleasure of subscribing to in nearly 25 years of being online.

I think it purely comes down to the sound of the word. Hard consonants have more bite than soft consonants [this is why the 'see you next Tuesday' word is one of the most effective offence words in English].

No, that's an internet myth [likewise Ship High In Transit]. If you want to know the etymology for any expletive just look in the dictionary.

That's only because you don't speak French. They're both (at least, maird _sounds_ like the French merde) synonyms of shit. And yes, they're both expletives in that language.

Yeah I misspelled "merde" and didn't check because it really doesn't matter to the point in my view. To most people substitutions for what that society considers expletives or merely offensive are often nonsense words or simple mispronunciations or culturally biased. I've read that much of it came down to us when AngloSaxon was outlawed by William the Conqueror but even if that isn't so who cares now? It's still childish and silly.

An example of that is thinking garbage, with harder "g's" is somehow different (and more offensive) than garbage with the accent on the last syllable and a softer "g". It's all just so ridiculous not to consider the thing itself rather than a symbolic word. Furthermore in rural America shit is not an expletive because the thing itself isn't considered so offensive as it is worked with and around as a consequence of livestock and for fertilizer. There are far more important things to be concerned with than symbols or their sounds or their etymology let alone someone's prissy trumped up sensibilities. IMHO People should just grow up already and stop making mountains out of molehills.
