Fresh install png trouble

Fresh install of current-12-2018: I've no icons!

Code:
libxfce4panel-Message: 20:24:31.488: Failed to load image "/usr/share/pixmaps/xfce4_xicon1.png": Couldn’t recognize the image file format for file “/usr/share/pixmaps/xfce4_xicon1.png”
(geeqie:3929): Gtk-WARNING **: 20:24:47.354: Error loading theme icon 'go-previous' for stock: Unrecognized image file format
Things I did do were
  • Double check libpng is installed
  • Go into the 'x' and 'xfce' directories and run 'updatepkg --install-new *.txz'
  • Go into xap & install everything that wasn't clearly superfluous
  • reboot

What interprets png that I haven't got with this scattergun approach?
X is a real mess ATM.

just a shot in the dark, it just might be a corrupted png file. did you try that end of it, by opening up a few in a image viewer to verify they are not the issue?

Just another shot in the dark. In the other thread related to the WiFi issues you mentioned you're using a SSD drive. Given the inconsistencies you had there and the potentially corrupted files with this new install, I was wondering if the SSD is still in good shape. You can test it by following this article:
https://www.linux.com/learn/intro-to...d-health-smart
- remove the sudo part and run smartctl as root. I'd advise to not run the self-tests, especially the long test, maybe not even the short test, as you might break your drive. Just interrogate the SMART status / Health-check first.

Thanks guys.

Yes, I was having WiFi issues. I'm relieved that you're not telling me that I need this package, and implying I should have known that. I will act accordingly. I started X as root, got the default setup and still no icons. It can't read PNG, and that becomes clear as soon as I run 'startx'. I feel another fresh install coming on :-/.

As for the WiFi, see that thread.

Edit: I deleted everything on the / of 2 OSes, swapped out the / drive and reinstalled. The second is a spare and for dependency-laden crap because I don't enjoy building 25 slackbuilds :-/. Everything's good.

you could do what I did, get that current ISO, look at its date, because it is rather current, then untar it in its own directory, then run the commands to reinstall the files in a loop.

That way you will not have to do a complete reinstall from scratch, taking less time.

what I did

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...644/page2.html

that does not take too much time to reinstall a 'fresh' complete system, and you'll still be able to work or play on the system while its reinstalling itself. Then if the png issue is still there, that should indicate it is not you, because everything is a fresh off the slack BBQ rack. sooo...

I feel happier swapping out the root, and cleaning away the old dross, because I had files not in any pkg that were lying there, There's no legitimate reason for not reading pngs; likewise for wifi delays (which I had). Some guys were suspecting the partition. Neither rsync or upgradepkg seemed to be deleting 100% of what they should. This is kind of belt & braces, and a catharsis at the same time.

If is permitted a side comment, when the Internet connection is unreliable (e.g. having a bad Wi-Fi which drops packets), from my experience the best way to download something huge like the Slackware install DVD, is to use the Torrent files, then after download finishes, to check the files from torrent.

Dead right, ZhaoLin1457. My issue was logging in delays. On boot, I had a significant delay. Once I got online I was fine. I could restart the network without delay. But something like that is a sign of unreliability.
