undo Ubuntu's default virtual terminal color scheme

For years, probably at least back to Breezy, Ubuntu's vtty color scheme has annoyed me. Today I finally figured out how to turn it off:
Code:
setvtrgb /etc/console-setup/vtrgb.vga
But, it doesn't persist across boots. I tried putting it in /etc/profile.local, but there it is ignored. What's the secret to making Ubuntu always use the kernel's default color scheme in its framebuffers?

i think i vaguely remember it being configurable via
Code:
update-alternatives
i think i stumbled upon it playing with galternatives (a gui frontend).

In /etc/profile.d/ 'setvtrgb /etc/console-setup/vtrgb.vga' works, but I'd still like to know why vtrgb and vtrgb.vga are provided by console-setup-linux and default to being different from other distros.
