video problems upgrading wheezy to jessie

Hello all,

I haven't found anything searching that quite matches my problem.
I'm not an expert so please bear with me.

When i upgraded from wheezy to jessie all went well apart from my display its like the wrong driver is installed.

My sources for the upgrade were;

deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main non-free

From the initial grub boot screen where the fonts are large thru to the xfce4 desktop where the fonts are barely readable.

The display was fine in wheezy and lspci reports my video as an AMD/ATI ES1000 rev 02. I have read there can be problems with this controller but When I do a fresh install to a clean disk the display is fine so its only if i perform an upgrade that things seem to go wrong.

I've tried removing, purging and reinstalling xserver and xfce4 but the problem remains and I don't have an x11.conf

I'm kinda lost now it seems odd that a clean install works but an upgrade doesn't so i'm guessing somethings lying around somewhere from wheezy

Anything else I could be trying ?

Thanks very much

Pappin

so when you open xfce4 all of the fonts in there are set too small for you to read? if yes, try resetting the settings for the font size in xfce4's system settings afterwards to change your fonts sizes. in your gurb try modding it to change your display size.
/etc/default/grub

Code:
# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
#GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32
where the line is, if it is commented out, just uncomment it , and I'd add at the end of it 'auto' seperated bya comma , just in case any rez you set does not work it will go into auto and pick one that does, then update-grub reboot and see what that does for you.

You could go as far as getting your old gurb file and save it, then use that one as a template for your new one. Take a peek at it to see what its settings are even.

GRUB/Tips and tricks

install your correct video card driver by hand after you've upgraded.
