Question Missing icons in notification area

Today after 22 day uptime and reboot (automatic safe-upgrades daily), many of my utilities no longer populate the notification area, but some do.

Debian 9
XFCE

failing: Shutter,AutoKey,Alarms,clip-it,blueman,Dropbox
working: Synapse,QuiteRSS,deja-dupe

The failing application are running, and can be killed and re-run but without resolve to the missing icons.

Any ideas?

a history of updates and adding "Indicator Plugin" to my panel fixed. (you may also want the "notification area" plugin) there was a long period of it not working.
