Question Upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS

Hello everyone,
urgading to 17.04 or 18.04 ?
I have tried sudo apt-get upgrade and ubuntu says that
it has looked at the set-up ( localised french ) and
didn't install anything.

Or do I need to upgrade ?

TIA

No need to upgrade quite yet. 16.04 is a LTS (long-term version), 17.04 isn't. 18.04, the next LTS version, will be out this spring - wait for that to come out before upgrading to it.

sudo apt-get upgrade, despite its name, only updates software packages that are currently on your computer and in the repositories. Wait for 18.04 to come out and there will be instructions available at that time on how to upgrade your system.

Thanks hydrurga,
Then I wait. I figured after 2 x .o4 releases I should investigate upgrades.
Thanks

No problem, mycuser. Some people enjoy installing the short-term releases. Personally, I prefer the stability of the long-term releases (in my case through the Ubuntu derivative Linux Mint), but I also keep some chosen applications more up-to-date through PPAs, external repositories, installation of deb packages etc. As long as you're careful on the provenance of such applications, it provides a nice blend of stability and "up-to-dateness".

My preference is to wait at least for the first "point" release, in this case 18.04.1, which will probably be released in Aug.

Good point. You're certainly not the only one to do that. In fact, I think that Ubuntu only enables upgrades by default once the first point release has been issued, and recommends that most users wait until that release before upgrading, although a user can force an upgrade before then.

In my case, Linux Mint 19, based on Ubuntu 18.04, will probably see the light of day two months after the release of 18.04, thus allowing a fair amount of time for wrinkles to be ironed out.
