Since I opted to go with the latest (stable) 56.0 binaries and not ESR, the only problem is the theme, it will not use my GTK3 theme, how do I fix that?
SO I have a feeling if I were to upgrade Thunderbird I would have the same problem
Thunderbird's development lags behind Firefox's (which, given the state of Firefox right now, is a benefit rather than a hindrance), so the often radical changes you see between Firefox releases tend not to affect Thunderbird: the major changes these days are mostly limited to the shared build system. The latest stable version of Thunderbird is already available as an update for 14.2, and plays nice with GTK+3 themes.

so does it default to the (inbuilt) adwaita theme (whitish with blue highlights)?
do you have other gtk3 applications that show the same symptoms?
have you tried changing to some other, often-updated theme? maybe numix or arc?

No matter what theme I choose Firefox stays the same , other programs do not have this issue. I even when in and changed Firefox settings to use system colors, no change. I am using LXDE, and I have even tried using default LXDE colors as well as the ones I am using that I added myself.
Did not know that, I guess ESR falls back on GTK2 only. I have tried some other themes, which do seem to finally change FF colors. Would be nice if things would just stay consistent, I have even looked into trying to make my own custom schemes, but with no actual luck. Some themes do not allow you to change the colors, and the ones that are allowed do not transition over to FF. Example, the theme I usually have is similar to the Windows Rainy Day color scheme (don't judge me - I happen to always like that scheme :P)
The theme Raleigh seems to carry over - but I can't modify the colors though. I know this is a minor annoyance; but for consistency it would be nice for a change for themes to carry on a little more nicely. If that means say ditching GTK2 for in favor of solely GTK3+ or whatever, fine then. Maybe that is rather too simplistic coming from me, but honestly it would be nice.
Redmond must be GTK2 since it doesn't carry over to FF though; which is useless anyways since I also cannot modify the colour scheme....
