A little hissy-fit over libc6

Everything had been fine untill I needed to upgrade VirtualBox from 6.0.22...
In the vBox guide it said to simply install the update on top the old install. Well, wondering what to do before that, I had already uninstalled vBox, so went ahead with my downloaded copy of:
virtualbox-6.1_6.1.10-138449~Ubuntu~eoan_amd64.deb
When I opened it with dpkg, I got the error "Errorependency is not satisfiable libc6 (>=2.29)". I have version 2.27.

Due to urgency to get back to work, I attemped to re-install my older version of VirtualBox, and... whoops, got the same dependency error. Panic sets in..

So, I downloaded a .deb install of libc6-2.30, and opened a ctrl/alt/f4 terminal:
- - - - - -
$ sudo dpkg -i libc6_2.30-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
[sudo] password for bilbo:
dpkg: regarding libc6_2.30-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb containing libc6:amd64:
libc6:amd64 breaks locales (<< 2.30)
locales (version 2.27-3ubuntu1) is present and installed.

dpkg: error processing archive libc6_2.30-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb (--install):
installing libc6:amd64 would break locales, and
deconfiguration is not permitted (--auto-deconfigure might help)
Errors were encountered while processing:
libc6_2.30-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
- - - - -

I do not know the scope of libc6, so a brute force overwrite of it may hurt a bigger part of the system.
I tried uninstalling and re-installing the gcc compiler (with software manager) but that only highlighted my ignorance.

Is there an over-all package that deals with the libv6?
Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

libc6 is the core base library that's actually executing your binary, so you need to be careful about it. GCC is unrelated.
Are you sure you're reinstalling the version you had? And without installing it, you can't currently run it? You need to check what version and in what state actually is listed in your apt.
All in all, vbox creates thousands of issues out of nowhere so when I upgrade that thing I always back up it's config directory along with the most imporant disks elsewhere, because there's no knowing what it'll do.

Why?

libc6 is extremely important and your system will break if you try to manually upgrade it.

Wait, libc6 2.27 is the version in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic). Why are you trying to install the VirtualBox package for Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan) on it? What is wrong with
virtualbox-6.1_6.1.10-138449~Ubuntu~bionic_amd64.deb?

happy day !!

Thank you shruggy !
That was the comment I was so desperately looking for. I downloaded it, dpkg looked at it, and it liked it.
I must have thought since my mint 19.3 is the latest, that I also had the latest ubuntu... not so.
Mint 20's labor pains are starting (beta release), so down the road I will know what is happening.
I feel so relieved.. thanks again.
