We agree on this. At least in the medium term this is the ethical solution. Reusing/repurposing rather than producing new hardware.

Thanks, I have a feeling I considered that previously, but Wikipedia says LTE support is US/Verizon only.
Also, that Maemo page says "WIP" and "no UI yet" for SMS and Phone calls. While there is some appeal to just a pocket GNU/Linux computer, I definitely need phone capabilities too.

BTW, the fairphone is "as ethically produced as realistically possible" - some of the components used in smartphones nowadays cannot be had "ethically". Personally I prefer to always buy used smartphones. In my book, that's ethical. Grassroot economics, just like the software development.

Fair enough. For electronics, I'm good with refurb / approved used (and will do so when it meets my needs), but the uncertainty of buying used from a fully unknown entity is an issue for me.
Purchasing from organisations that are openly pushing in the right direction is the next best thing.

Confusingly, Technoethical seems to be hosted at tehnoetic.com, despite also owning the domain technoethical.com?

They mean the same thing, and the project started with the Romanian brand Tehnoetic, which is still promoted as such on different other projects' websites. Anyway I'm not a fan of branding and so far I didn't spend the time to move everything to the newer domain. :-)

Ah, cool. That'll be the first two words of Romanian I've learnt then.

I would have guessed the language used a Cyrillic alphabet - apparently it was migrated over to a Latin-based one between 1830 and 1860.

Foarte bine. ;-) Although, generally speaking, these two words are Greek words (techne and ethos) that are used in many other languages in slightly different variations.

It made more sense to return to the Latin alphabet, being a Romance language close to Italian. The Cyrillic was used being influenced by the Bulgarian Empires and the Eastern Orthodox Church. Please PM if you'd like to continue the cultural exchange, to avoid getting off-topic here. :-)

My current boss had lost his non-smart smartphone to a bunch of nitwit thieves and was obliged to buy a new one. I could not save him, he was too quick. In addition, the thieves noticed that the thing was crap and left it quickly behind. He had it back two days later and now there are two of these mostly dysfunctional objects lying around.

I believe pine64 are about to roll out a batch of PinePhones with postmarketOS pre-installed.
While already writing I realise that it's not Replicant; but also Android-based.

The acid test: How many devs are there in Replicant? Have they sales, or backers?
