Okay! I need your help one more time, as I'm having trouble searching and understanding what I'm reading. here are the two laptops which I am looking to buy.

Thinkpad T470P - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Thin...-/163953335186

Thinkpad T480s - https://www.ebay.com/itm/OPEN-BOX-Le...zL5sE#viTabs_0

the 470P has a 7th gen i7, but it has quad cores. The 480s has 8th gen, but is slim, which I don't care about.

The 470P also has a NVIDIA 940MX GPU.

Trying to decide on these two ASAP. Thank you for your help.

I'd go T480s.

8th gen = quad core, but 15-watt instead of the 45-watt of the H series part on the T470P.

If you're not wanting to play games, then Intel > Nvidia in terms of the graphics. Nvidia open source drivers are...ok...most of the time. You'll probably ned to run the proprietary drivers to get proper performance, and they're a hassle to bother with and have issues on occassion. Intel drivers are open source, so just work and are always included in the kernel, no need to build a module.

Battery life will be significantly better with a 15-watt cpu using IGP than a 45-watt CPU with discrete graphics.

The downsides are of course only having 8 GB ram, and the 512 GB SSD of the T470 will offer slightly better performance as there isn't sufficient parallelism on a modern 256 to keep up. But both can be upgraded (the 8 GB on the T480S are the soldered, there is 1 slot to upgrade).

The T470P seems to have more docks for upgrades, I could be wrong though. It says on the specs that it has an empty slot for an extra hard drive. It would be great if I could put a 1TB HDD in it.

Thank you, Timothy! The i7-7820HQ is supposed to have quad cores.

Yes, it does. I'm pointing out that the 7820HQ is a 45-watt cpu.
The 8th generation i7 in the T480S also is a quad-core, but a U series, so is only a 15-watt cpu. So same number of cores (the 7th gen will run at a higher frequency), but 1/3 the power draw for the 8th gen.

Ah, okay. So lower level frequency = better performance?

No, higher frequency generally is better performance, but the 8th gens burst to higher levels than the 7th. The 7th will have higher base frequencies though. Overall, the 7th gen H series will be slightly better overall performance than the 8th gen U series, but the question comes down to is 5% performance worth giving up 1/2 the battery life? For me the answer will be no every time.

I'm a newbie and this is only my second visit to the forum so I hope I'm not too far out of line. I wanted to post in this thread because it is substantially the same subject. [I don't think I'm allowed to post it anywhere else] I wanted to get feedback on the Dell XPS-13 Developer edition with Linux OS https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell...x13w11p1c4001u. I understand this is a very expensive machine based on what I'm reading here, but I'm in a time crunch --- need a machine immediately and need something to help me make the transition from windows. The sales agent I spoke to explained they have a tutorial type platform. Given my limitations, can you Linux pros weigh in. What are your thoughts? Thank you, thank you in advance. (I've even forgotten my handle --- I hope it shows up, if not I apologize. I'm learning)

An anside, you would probably do better to start a new thread with a subject relevant to your precise question rather than resurrect one that's almost three years old.
