tracking SPI hardware output from RPi using simple LED as an indicator

I like to verify my code by checking the actual hardware.
I see no restrictions as far as setting the SPI speed to 1Hz.
So in theory I should be able to observe CE/SS signal with LED - 8 bit word with clock speed of 1 Hz should take about 8 seconds.
No so.
Is my test method wrong and why ?
