Older kernels are routinely used to build newer kernels. Think about it. How else could newer versions be made available?

I did a reinstall of Xorg. Here is the resulting Xorg log: https://pastebin.com/raw/0eQAtszf

and here is the new log from startx: https://pastebin.com/raw/772KK4HS

The newer of those two files aborts so quickly with no screens found I can only guess at part of what is missing: for startx to work, xserver-xorg-legacy needs to be installed. Installing it should make startx a lot more useful, but it may not be even close to enough. There may be clue(s) in 'sudo journalctl -b', so redirect it to a file and upload the file for examination. Using startx is deprecated mostly because of the danger using it creates. Focus should instead be on getting a working display manager. At this point though, a fresh installation is likely to be a lot easier than fixing this, and I still think you should try to get the mods to move this thread to the Debian forum.
