Okay,

This appears to be an issue with the phone and USB 3.0 ports

I'm going to close this question and repost

I can't use them now, but they will more than likely come in handy when I replace the phone next month or so

I remember I had similar problems with an old smartphone (android 4 or so) and recent kernels. I remember that manually binding the usb device (the phone) to the usb_storage driver let me mount the phone (and use usb tethering if I remember correctly).

To do so you can follow the instruction given here:

Probably you also need to set the device id in the new_id entry of the driver (see the first comment of the article I linked).
