firefox 68.4.1 sound has stopped

I am running Slackware 14.2 and can no longer play music using Firefox, my preferred browser. Vivaldi and Chromium are working fine. Can someone suggest what happened?

There was an update for FF put out to the repos yesterday (68.4.2). Update via SlackPkg and then post back here if that updated FF works or not.

No difference. I am going to WQXR,org. There is a "listen now" button that should start streaming the current program. In Firefox it does nothing, but with Vivaldi or Chromium the streaming starts.

as firefox uses ffmpeg by default to handle multimedia, I would check if your ffmpeg is working correctly: you can try playing an mp3 (the wxqr.org stream is an mp3) with the commandline ffmpeg player ffplay.

Hello,

I don't have a Slackware 14.2 at hand but I just tried mozilla-firefox-68.4.2esr-x86_64-1_slack14.2 in my Slint and I hear the live stream https://www.wqxr.org/. So the issue should be with another component of your system as suggested by Matteo.

PS Thanks for the link. I like classical music including of course Mozart.

I am now more than slightly confused. I could swear I used to listen to music with firefox, but it might have been on one of my other computers. When I did a "which ffmpeg" nothing was in the search path. Using a "locate" I found modified versions of ffmpeg under audacity, and the other browsers. Rather than creating a link to one of those, I went to SlackBuild, downloaded the source code for ffmpeg along with the ffmpeg.SlackBuild file, compiled and installed it. Firefox now works fine. I guess my question now is did Firefox used to include ffmpeg with it? Thank you everyone for all of your help.

no, firefox never shipped an internal ffmpeg, but older versions of it (years ago) used gst-plugins-libav to handle mp3s and that is shipped with Slackware, could be that.

I do have Slackware64 14.2/FF 68.4.2ESR and am using AlienBob's ffmpeg-3.4.6-x86_64-1. I can also hear the music.

Oh, and yes, thanks for the link. I also enjoy Classical occasionally.
