I think I should end this thread. I tried the amdgpu driver and the computer would not boot. Chrooting from a Parted Magic DVD solved it. While Pitcairn is GCN1, I've now read that amdgpu supports GCN >= v1.2. Perhaps that was the problem. When in Parted Magic I tried the TV HDMI connection: nothing.

So I've learned a little and refreshed a little and thank you all for your help!
