Which file to replace with Vanilla File when having issues with Pam?

I'm doing some hardening under /etc/pam.d/ under system-auth-ac for RHEL5.

Now the system is acting odd and I want to see if the following is possible.

1. Turn on some sort of auditing to see where the issue is?

2. Replace system-auth-ac with a vanilla file that I backed up before starting any changes? Or do I want to replace system-auth? Not sure since we have a soft link here and I don't want to make things worst.

Are you sure you're using RHEL5? The last update was in 2014, and it's based on FC 6. We're up to FC 27 now. I don't think anything recent involving PAM applies to RHEL5. It uses the 2.6 kernel. It doesn't use systemd. But if I had to guess on your question, I'd say restore the file from a backup.
