Installation with DVD not working.

I cannot access my DVD installation disk for Linux Mint on my XP computer. I have tried several times, but no success. Is there a way to directly install this program without going through the DVD or Flash Drive method? I really want to try this program as a replacement for my XP.

Hi and welcome to LQ.

Have you made sure in the BIOS that the CD/DVD drive is given priority when the computer boots up?

How did you create the DVD?

If you don't want to install from a boot media (DVD/flash drive), the other option is to run a virtualisation program such as VirtualBox in Windows and run Linux Mint under that. That would allow you to test Linux, but it wouldn't be as good a test of Mint running on your hardware as running Mint live from the DVD.

Go into your BIOS and check on the boot order.

Generally it's already set to boot to the CDROM drive. If it's not set it to the CDROM drive like hydrurga has suggested.

If that fails than go back into the BIOS and set the boot order to usb and boot to flash drive formatting to the Linux distro of your choice.

-:::-IF your machine is UEFI you will have to disable the secure boot in order to install Linux.-::-

Can it boot to any DVD?
Does your old system support this new OS?
Did you use best quality DVD?
Did you burn at the very slowest speed?
Did you try some other OS on a CD made for older systems?
Did you check the MD5 or shal of the iso image.
Did you burn it as a disc image or file?

Just in case none of the above makes any bit of sense to you...

Question: What are you doing, step-by-step, that's leading up to your problem?

Are you trying to double-click on the DVD drive from within Windows XP?

Let's start with that and go from there.
