Troubleshooting Display and Scroll Issues on Debian 9 with KDE

I recently received an older Gateway computer from my work. This morning I took the hard drive out of my main machine and placed it in the Gateway with the intent of making it my primary. However, I noticed some issues with display and scrolling behavior. Specifically:
  1. It seems as if the screen/display is "zoomed in" compared to the other machine I was using. The resolution is at the default of 1024 x 768. I am using exactly the same monitor as I was with the other machine (which worked fine).
  2. When I am attempting to scroll down on page (both in Firefox and other apps such as Thunderbird), sometimes the page "sticks" (that is, it does not want to scroll down); other times, instead of moving down, it actually "jumps" up slightly.

For the graphics card, the machine has (according to hwinfo) an Intel 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller. From my research it does not seem as if this graphics card should be problematic with the OS.

What can I do to troubleshoot or what might the issue be? Sorry, if this is a silly question, but I never encountered this issue before, and I am not knowledgeable about computer graphics.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I am afraid I am not well-acquainted with the Xorg.0.log file and I am not quite sure what exactly to look for. I will attach the file for reference, but if anyone can help direct me to what lines or words I could look for in the file, I would be glad to find and post the relevant part myself.

Thanks.

Have you tried that display with any other PC? If not, it's possible the display is the problem, or the cable. Do you have access to any other display to try using? If yes, does the trouble remain?

The multitude of lines in your log that include modeset(0): are reporting use of the modesetting X driver. Next thing to try is switching to the Intel X driver. To do so, install xserver-xorg-video-intel and restart your X session or reboot. If it doesn't make any apparent change, it might be necessary to do some usually unnecessary non-trivial manual configuration, possibly including removal of xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Scrolling can be problematic in firefox, or any browser, because of scripts that run in the web pages. But TB I can't figure out. The new/old machine probably is set for a different screen resolution than the other machine. 1024x768 is pretty coarse. see if you can open system settings, and then display, and change the resolution. Do you know what the native resolution of the monitor is?

From 300mmx230mm and Manufacturer: HWP Model: 2590 Serial#: 16843009 & Year: 2003 Week: 40 and more in the log it looks like a 15" 1024x768 LCD, but then hp f1503 leads to https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00036535 which confirms it. 2003 + HP makes it a good candidate for bad capacitors being the root of OP's problem rather than software.
