Unhappy Suspend / resume dosen't work on hybrid graphic laptop

Hi guys,

Need some help to get suspend / resume working properly on my ZBook 14u g5 with Xubuntu 17.10. This is a hybrid graphic machine, with two graphic cards (and I suspect my problem is related to this) :

Code:
Lyude@ZBook-Lyude:/var/log$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card-1: Intel Device 5917
           Card-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Polaris12
           Display Server: x11 (X.Org 1.19.5 ) drivers: intel (unloaded: amdgpu) Resolution: 1920x1080@60.03hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Kabylake GT1.5 version: 4.5 Mesa 17.2.8
When I open a xfce session, then suspend it (to ram, no hibernation), then resume it, and suspend it again, lspci (and some other stuff) stop working and I have to reboot my laptop. This is the kind of output I have in dmesg when it happens :

Code:

Any idea how to fix that ? A workaround ?

(Edit)

This is a dual boot laptop with Windows 10 and Xubuntu, and the dual GPU works well on Windows, and is almost working on Xubuntu, with DRI_PRIME allowing to choose which GPU is used... So I would like to keep both GPU and not tweak the bios to make one disappear

Code:
Lyude@ZBook-Lyude:/usr/share/X11$ DRI_PRIME=0 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Kabylake GT1.5

Lyude@ZBook-Lyude:/usr/share/X11$ DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon Pro WX3100 (AMD POLARIS12 / DRM 3.18.0 / 4.13.0-38-generic, LLVM 5.0.0)

The few posts about this problem suggest that you are right about the graphics being an issue. Have you made sure that the dedicated AMD driver is installed?

Hi David,

Thanks for the link !

I knew from the beginning that the hybrid graphics might be an issue on Linux. Make sure it works was the first thing I did on a brand new Xubuntu install.

First, with the default opensource driver, I noticed that suspend, then resume would freeze X after the login screen.

Then I tried the amdgpu-pro-16.40-348864 package/driver. But the situation got worse : Screen resolution was wrong, display was stretched, and freezing issue was still here.

So I reverted to default driver, noticed an error message mentioning a [drm] permission issue (didn't save the exact message ), and read a thread somewhere on the Internet suggesting a detection order issue with Xorg. The workaround was easy : "X -configure" and "cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf" so stuff was always found in the same order.

This was my best attempt so far ! I could suspend / resume / suspend / crash amdgpu driver. This is my previous post.

Finally, this morning, after reading your answer, I found and tried the amdgpu-pro-17.50-552542 package/driver. The results were roughly the same as previously (with amdgpu-pro-16.40-348864) except that I now have a new error :

Code:
> DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"
libGL error: unable to load driver: i965_dri.so
libGL error: driver pointer missing
libGL error: failed to load driver: i965
OpenGL renderer string: llvmpipe (LLVM 5.0, 256 bits)
I think I will try to make hibernation to hard drive work (instead of suspend to RAM) to see if it solve my GPU issues... Or try to install a Xubuntu 16.04 to see if AMD drivers perform better on their targeted Ubuntu release.

If you're going to use hibernation, you'll need to enable it:
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/...-ubuntu-17-10/

So many people have had problems with suspending and hibernating over the years that I've always avoided it. With modern fast boot times — you've got SSD and systemd — is it really useful?

Do you have a touch screen? If you use it, you'll find the Gnome desktop has the best support, according to tests at Distrowatch last year.

Hi David,

I do agree regarding fast boot times. That's why I consider hibernation to SSD instead of suspend to RAM. The problem is the time you need to restore your working session ; reopen every app, put all of them in their previous state... When I have to move from my desk, whatever the reason, I want to be able to close my laptop and know I will get everything back later.

Alas, I couldn't make hibernation work. Best workaround I could find was giving more memory to the Intel GPU (in BIOS) and add a boot parameter in grub to prevent the kernel from loading the amdgpu driver.

In /etc/default/grub, blacklist the amdgpu driver, and do an update-grub :

Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=amdgpu"
If for any reason, I change my mind and want to use the AMD GPU, I have to remove the blacklist parameter at boot time and use the DRI_PRIME=1 feature (and renounce to suspend !)

Had Issues with Ubuntu 18.04 re-installed THRICE over the past 4 months to get issues like this resolved (no TTY3-7, suspend or hibernate doesn't work or stops working)

Problems definitely involved were "Nvidia Issues 396 and 390 weren't working now both are. In an odd way After my last Ubuntu 18.04 I have slowly added all my programs and 2 weeks later now I can't break it even if I try. One quirk is that Suspend works and Hibernate works only using "Hybrid" Mode which is fine. Hibernate seems to work but no flashing power button and it needs to be restarted - weird. Again in Hybrid mode which first puts it to RAM (Suspend) and then after a short while Suspends to DISK (Hibernation), it works perfectly and the power button blinks to show you it has worked.

I will post a few Tomboy notes that may help others. Sorry if they translate garbled.

Just trying to help, Mark

18/07 Troubleshooting
‣ Prerequisites - does your kernel support suspend-to-disk?
• Kernel supports whatever is listed in /sys/power/state, so:
• cat /sys/power/state
• Allowed (to my knowledge) entries there include: mem, standby, freeze, disk. Explanation:
∘ mem - has several meanings, which one exactly on your system you'll find out via cat /sys/power/mem_sleep. I have: s2idle [deep]
∘ standby - Power-On Suspend (if supported)
∘ freeze - Suspend To Idle (STI)
∘ disk - Hibernate - Suspend To Disk (STD), This - you want.
∘ mine says : freeze mem disk - PERFECT!
• Then we need to check
• $ cat /sys/power/disk
‣ [platform] shutdown reboot suspend test_resume
‣ [disabled]
• (not very good)
‣ Enable Hibernate and put it in menu - Easy-Peasy
• sudo apt install pm-utils cpufrequtils
• Then test if hibernate works in your computer by running command:
• sudo pm-hibernate
• After you computer turns off, switch it back on.
‣ Did your open applications re-open? If so it works, if not then hibernate does not work. You can check if your Swappiness partition is at least as large as your available RAM, as it may solve the problem.Problem! Hibernation not allowed!
∘ Test: pm-hibernate - (if pm-utils package is installed) , or
∘ works! after 18.04 re-install and no Nvidia yet
∘ systemctl hibernate
∘ works! after 18.04 re-install and no Nvidia yet

∘ Re-add Hibernate Option to Shutdown menu:
• 1. Edit a specific file with this command.
• sudo gedit /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/com.ubuntu.desktop.pkla

• 2. Scroll down the Text Document and find the below sections:
∘ [Disable hibernate by default in upower]
∘ [Disable hibernate by default in logind]
∘ Change both the values from no to yes in:
∘ ResultActive=no (change this to yes)
‣ Save, Exit & Reboot - Done!
