2017 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Award Categories

It's once again that time of year; the 2017 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Award are almost upon us. Here is the list of proposed categories for this year. Please remember, while we understand that some categories end up containing projects that might not be directly comparable, it's simply not feasible to have enough categories to be all encompassing. If you have suggestions on additions, subtractions or modifications, let us know. I'll be finalizing the list and posting the polls based on feedback from this thread.

For reference, this was the list from last year:

Quote:
Desktop Distribution of the Year
Server Distribution of the Year
Mobile Distribution of the Year
Database of the Year
Office Suite of the Year
Browser of the Year
Desktop Environment of the Year
Window Manager of the Year
Audio Media Player Application of the Year
Video Media Player Application of the Year
Network Security Application of the Year
Host Security Application of the Year
Network Monitoring Application of the Year
IDE of the Year
Text Editor of the Year
File Manager of the Year
Open Source Game of the Year
Programming Language of the Year
Backup Application of the Year
Configuration Management Tool of the Year
X Terminal Emulator of the Year
Privacy Solution of the Year
Open Source File Sync Application of the Year
Video Authoring Application of the Year
IRC Client of the Year
Package Manager of the Year
Linux Filesystem of the Year
Open Source Single Board Computer of the Year
Virtualization Application of the Year
Container Application of the Year
Linux/Open Source Podcast of the Year
Linux/Open Source Magazine of the Year
Instant Messaging Client of the Year
Digital Audio Workstation of the Year
Raster Graphics Editor of the Year
Linux Server Vendor of the Year
Proposed changes:

* Remove Mobile Distribution of the Year as Android has dominated the category recently. Possibly replace with Live or Security/Pen Test category.
* Raster Graphics Editor of the Year will be rotated out for Vector Graphics Editor of the Year
* Remove Linux/Open Source Magazine of the Year.
* Rotate out Package Manager of the Year and replace with a category containing Appimage, Flatpak, Snaps, etc.
* Rotate out Linux Server Vendor of the Year for either Desktop or Laptop.
* Rotate out Configuration Management Tool of the Year and replace with a Log Management category.

There are a couple other categories that are likely in need of a refresh or due to be rotated out. Thoughts?

Embedded distro over the year?
RPi distro of the year?
"Saved my Bacon" tool of the year? (I'd vote for either strace or valgrind on that one)

Some suggestions:

*Best live distro running (stress that the distro is actually running live not simply because it has that capability)
*Best lightweight distro (ie runs on 1 GB RAM or less)

USB creator otY (possibly multiboot/crossplatform; with best UEFI support):
LOTS of posts mention these (yes, many are M$Win apps, so not Linux)
@Jeremy: I strongly lobby for this, if feasible.

MAYBE?something?somehow? related to WannaCry&etc/minixME/WPA2KRACK/etc
Sorry I'm totally vague here; maybe something that addresses Newbie security questions
(I realize 2 polls include wireshark & SEL; my thot is more general/overview,
but maybe such a concept of general security is not a poll-able 'tool'/pgm.)

Personally, I agree with most of your proposed changes but, I'd say for the first proposal; a "Live" distro category would probably be better than a Security/PenTest category. Given that other than our old mate Kali Linux; what other "PenTest" options would there really be? (I don't personally know of a lot of other options, short of installing the tools you would find in Kali on another distro - Debian itself perhaps?)

I also think that the suggestions in post #3 are a good idea given the "social media" age that we are currently living and ranting in. (I don't use FB, Twitter, etc myself)

PS: Ditched Ubuntu have we Jeremy? I'm sorry but I could not help but notice your user agent icon - no Ubuntu logo. (I don't blame ya if ya did, BTW)

Just my $0.02
