Extended desktop on a single screen

Let me start by saying I am not sure if this will be explained well, so please ask any additional questions and I will endeavour to answer them

Currently at work I am using Manjaro-i3 and am very much enjoying the i3wm and all
its associated parts. My work config is:

2 x 24" screens set as an extended desktop where even workspaces are grouped on the left and the odd on the right. So when booted up 1 is left and 2 is right

I thought I would like to bring this home, but my requirements are slightly different.
Now I would like:

1 x 40" screen where I would like to do the same grouping as above so effectively splitting the screen in half for the associated areas

So we would have the even workspaces grouped on the left half of the screen and the odd on the right

If that wasn't enough, if we assume I can get the above working, my push goal would
be to have one workspace (probably number 9) open and take up the entire screen.
This would be nice for when sitting back and watching a show

Not familiar with i3wm, but you might be able to create groups, one for each set of programs that you normally have on each screen of your work computer. Regarding going full screen, isn't there a shortcut key combo to do that(?).

Yes to full screen but my understanding would have been if I now have effectively 2 screens on the one then it would only go full screen on that and not across both.

As for odd/even on different screens, I had written that I already have this on my current machine so that is not a concern.

For those playing along at home here is the same thing I am looking to do.

I will look into herbstclient, but would still be interested if it can be done in i3

Usually you setup i3 with

man i3-save-tree - save (parts of) the layout tree for restoring

Layout saving/restoring is a feature that was introduced in i3 v4.8. Layout saving/restoring allows you to load a JSON layout file so that you can have a base layout to start working with after powering on your computer. Dynamic use-cases also come to mind: if you frequently (but not always!) need a grid layout of terminals with ping/traceroute commands to diagnose network issues, you can easily automate opening these windows in just the right layout.

Hi _roman_, thanks for the idea but on further reading of the man page it would seem like this will save what windows I have open in a workspace and then re-display them when called on.
Whilst a nice feature I am not sure it is on the right track that I am after.

This scenario would allow you to have several workspaces on each in an extended desktop fashion

I have a large 40" monitor and would like to treat it the same in that the left side of the screen is equivalent to screen 1 in depiction above, ie I want all my odd workspace numbers
to appear there and all the even ones on the right half of the screen as if it were screen 2

If I have missed how i3-save-tree might do similar, I am all ears
