Debian 9 stretch wifi down: connection activation failed

The wifi on my system had been working normally until yesterday when I installed LDAP. I don't know if LDAP caused this but thereafter I could no longer connect to any wifi network even though I could detect them. Trying to connect by clicking on the wifi network's name yields the following message:

Connection activation failed
(1) Not authorized to control networking
After some googling, I managed to find a temporary fix by doing the following:
cd /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d
touch system-wide-network-control.pkla
vim system-wide-network-control.pkla
in the file I wrote
[Adding or changing system-wide NetworkManager connections]
After doing the steps above, I can use wifi normally. However, I'm just curious at to what may have caused the wifi to break down in the first place?
