GUI Sign-in for Ubuntu Server

I'm new to Ubuntu and recently installed Ubuntu Server 18.04. I was able to install the server with no problems via Terminal mode. However, when I install the GUI I'm no longer able to sign-in.

I've reinstalled multiple times and continue to get the same results. I've insured that I've kept the password very simple but nothing changes.

I've installed the LightDM GUI sign-in, not sure if that an issues?

What could I be doing wrong with the install of the GUI?

Thanks

You might want to consider not installing a GUI at all, and do all maintenance via ssh.
(That is kindof the standard way to do it).

As you noticed, (needlessly) installing a GUI introduces lots of possible failure points.
Not only graphic drivers but maybe also your system going to sleep when idle etc.

I know it's not what you asked.

Have you looked at the log files? https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/viewing...les#1-overview

I'm not sure of Ubuntu's current naming conventions, but I would start with log files that don't reference specific applications, but system wide functions.
